Following the announcement of the postponement of the 12th board exams and the cancellation of the 10th board exams, the CBSE board has decided to put more emphasis on competency-based education (CBE).
The board is introducing changes in the 9th to 12th class examination and assessment practices for the session 2021-22. While overall marks and exam duration will remain the same, more competency-based questions that assess the application of concepts in real-life situations will be part of the examination.
Last year, the board decided to implement a competency-based education system for the development of practical and life skills among students rather than just depending upon textbook-based education. The board informed about this on 14 May via a circular.
What is CBE (Competency-Based Education)?
Competency-based learning (CBL) or Competency-based education (CBE) is an outcome‐based approach to education to ensure proficiency in learning by students through demonstration of the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes required for dealing with real-life situations at the age and grade-appropriate level.
Changes for Class 11 and 12
According to the revised pattern for Class 11 and 12, there will be 20 percent competency-based questions and 20 percent objective-type questions. Competency-based questions can be in the form of MCQs (multiple-choice questions), case-based questions, source-based integrated questions, or any other form.
As per the current scheme, 70 percent of the questions are of short/ long answer type, but now it will be reduced to 60 percent.
Changes for Class 9 and 10
For Class 9 and 10, there will be a minimum of 30 percent competency-based questions, 20 percent objective type questions, and the remaining 50 percent will be short/ long answer type questions.
In the current scheme, the Class 10 question paper consists of 20 percent objective type questions, 20 percent case-based / source-based integrated questions, and 60 percent short/ long answer type questions.
Earlier, the CBSE board decided to postpone the 12th class examination and will announce a revised 12th exam date sheet after reviewing the situation. The board cancelled the Class 10 exams 2021 and the result will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion.
